This is an important decision for Oulton. The Office for National Statistics predicts significant increases in the death rate in Leeds over the coming decades and Horizon’s new facility will complement the Council’s own crematoria.
Another application for a site near Oulton Academy has been submitted to Leeds Council, but realistically only one scheme will be approved. We believe the Horizon proposal is the stronger option: a better-designed building, in a more suitable location, with less impact on key local roads such as Wakefield Road. In addition, Horizon has a policy of avoiding sites near schools, given crematoria can be busy during peak times and due to sensitivities around mental health.
